Why I wrote it
I wrote the book I wish I had.
For years, I knew something was wrong and didn’t have the language to say it out loud. I had the feeling first — that quiet, persistent knowing that something in my family, my faith, or my relationships wasn’t right. But I didn’t have the words. So I stayed silent, the way I’d been taught to.
This book is what happened when I finally found the words. And if you're reading this, I think part of you has been looking for them too.

Quiet was the rule
There’s a kind of silence that gets handed down through families like an heirloom. You learn it before you learn your own name. You learn it the way you learn to breathe — without anyone teaching you, until one day you realize how shallow the breaths are.
For most of my life, I thought being good meant being quiet. I thought love meant keeping the peace. I thought faith meant not asking the questions that made everyone uncomfortable at the dinner table. I was wrong about all three.
This book is what happened when I finally asked the questions out loud.
